Ever since October last year, I have happily been a part of McLean Melody. Two days before Mother’s day, Claire, Alice and I participated in a special arts and crafts event. We made cards and paper flowers so we could give them out to all the mothers at the senior living center.
To start making our lily flowers, we had a book of colored paper with various patterns and colors on them. We folded the paper up, down, left, right. Then, bring the left and right edges to the middle and press down. Fold one side of the top layer to the middle and crease it. Then repeat that step on both sides. Unfold the middle crease and push it down flat, do that again on both sides. For the next step, fold the left and right lower edges to align it to the center crease. Unfold the previous step. Fold the top of the triangle to the edge of the bottom triangle. Then, carefully bring the bottom of the front flat up to the top. Keep flattening the paper, reversing the fold on the left and right edges. Fold the flap down to the bottom point. Fold the top left and right to align the center crease. Repeat the last step on the other three sides. Finally, the most exciting part to me is peeling the petals away and making the sides round using a chopstick or pencil. After all of those complex steps, your origami lily is complete!

On the Mothers day, after our usual performance, we gave out all the cards and flowers we had made the day before, because the flowers we made were out of paper, the seniors could keep the flowers in their rooms, and gaze at it everyday. This was a very special and memorable experience to me. I loved making them smile, and making their day brighter!
